THE SMALL DESK LIBRARY · PRACTICAL GUIDE
Plan the open footprint beside your keyboard
A case may be small when zipped but awkward while open. This simple paper exercise helps you decide whether a new organizer belongs on your desk.

Mark the space you can spare
Put your laptop, keyboard or notebook in its normal position. Use scrap paper to outline the area left for storage. Keep the space you need for a mouse, a drink and your forearm separate. This is a personal layout exercise, not an ergonomic assessment.
Test the reach
Place a small existing container inside the outline. Reach for a pen, replace it and turn a notebook page. Notice whether the container blocks another task or requires repeated moving. Include room for a lid, folded top or carrying handle; do not use closed case dimensions as the open footprint.
Rehearse cleanup
Lift the container and move it to the intended shelf or drawer. If you must remove half its contents to store it, the problem may be the landing spot rather than the organizer. Try a different place before purchasing.
Save the result
Record the usable width and depth, any height limit and the route to storage. When a seller cannot confirm open dimensions, the fit remains unverified. Choose a returnable option or postpone buying rather than treating a nice product photo as a measurement.
