The no-buy storage audit: when not to replace your case
A useful buying guide should help you decide not to buy. Use this audit when a new organizer looks appealing but you cannot name what it would change.

Name the actual problem
Finish the sentence: I cannot easily do this with my current setup. Finding an eraser, carrying tools between rooms and fitting a long ruler are different problems. A vague wish for a tidier desk does not tell you which product feature matters.
Try one free change
Remove unused contents, give one small object a separate pocket or move the container nearer to where you use it. Choose a change that addresses the named problem. Test it during ordinary work rather than judging an empty arrangement.
Set a replacement threshold
Write down what a replacement must do that your current setup cannot. Include fit and storage constraints. If the candidate does not clearly address that requirement, put it aside even if the color is attractive.
Keep a short record
After a few sessions, note whether the problem is still happening. Buy only if the obstacle remains and the candidate's relevant specifications are confirmed. This is a spending decision framework, not financial advice or evidence that a particular organizer will save time. It is perfectly reasonable for the audit to end with keeping what you have.
