How to measure a pouch without mistaking exterior size for capacity
A size listing is a starting point, not a promise that an object will fit. Use this worksheet before ordering a case online.

Measure the object first
Record the longest item with its cap, clip, cover or connector attached. Measure width and thickness too. If several items must travel together, measure the group arranged as you would actually pack it. A photograph can help you repeat the layout later.
Read the dimension labels
Check whether a listing describes width, depth and height in that order. Compare millimeters with millimeters. One inch equals 25.4 mm; for example, an 8-inch ruler is 203.2 mm long. Rounded conversions can hide a tight fit, so keep the original measurement when clearance is small.
Allow for the opening
Seams, lining, dividers and the zipper path take up room. Even an interior measurement may not describe the opening through which an item must pass. Ask for the opening dimensions when carrying a rigid object. Do not assume that flexible sides will stretch safely.
Keep a decision note
Write three lines: my longest item; confirmed usable clearance; what is still unknown. If the second line is missing, treat fit as uncertain. Review the return conditions before buying, especially when the seller is overseas. No universal allowance works for every sewn case.
