THE SMALL DESK LIBRARY · PRACTICAL GUIDE

Build a daily stationery kit from things you already own

Before choosing a new case, decide which items deserve to travel in it. A small daily kit is a working experiment, not a rule about how many pens you should own.

Separate daily from occasional

Gather the items you reached for during your last ordinary work session. Put rarely used colors, spare refills and special-purpose tools elsewhere. If you are not sure, keep a short tally for a few days instead of guessing from memory.

Assign a job to each item

A pen might handle quick notes; a pencil might handle changeable sketches. Keep both if they serve different tasks. Remove an item only when its job is already covered or not needed. The aim is usefulness, not the smallest possible count.

Keep refills off the desk

Store backups where you can find them, but do not automatically pack every spare in the daily case. Label the backup location. Carry a spare when running out would genuinely interrupt the work you expect to do.

Review after real use

At the end of a session, note what you missed and what you never touched. Repeat before changing the kit. This observation-based approach does not require a purchase, and it works with a cup, tray or pouch already at home. There is no tested capacity claim in this guide.
